Things to do in Newcastle on the weekend?

Driving up to Newcastle from Sydney with family this weekend to visit friends. I've never been before, and I'm interested in things like art, fashion, music and markets. Just looking for recommendations of things to do, places to see, where to shop?

If you contact the chambers of commerce in Newcastle they will send you a list of things..I have done it in the past when traveling and it was very helps.. a jumping off point.

Take a walk along the Foreshore & have lunch at the Brewery.  Its beautiful scenenery & good food!

You should visit Nobby's Beach, walk along the breakwall then along the foreshore. Then you can shop along Hunter St Mall (lots of shops inc clothes and music) then you can either eat at the Mall or the Brewery. On sunny weekends, at lunch the Brewery is so crowded but there are heaps of other places to eat.

I'm getting the XPT there this weekend, so much better than driving. It may take a little longer BUT you save money on fuel (ticket is like $25 per person, Central to Newcastle) and you can buy a DECENT lunch (like waaaay better than airplane food - they have 4 options, beef, chicken, fish or vegetarian)

and have a few glasses of wine as well... and you can sit back and relax and not worry about traffic. If you get peckish or need to go to the bathroom you don't have to look for somewhere to stop, you just go to the food car and get some snacks and coffee and what not.. The XPT is cool...

An event called steam fest is on in maitland this weekend ,its about 20 minutes from newcastle http://www.maitlandhuntervalley.com.au/a...
