  1. Protaras a lovely area to stay, but as its a fairly new resort ( only around 25-30 years old!!!) theres not a great deal of history in the immediate vicinity. There is a beautiful church, perched high on a hill; Ayios Ilias; its quite a climb, but worth a visit, with stunning views surrounding it.

Protaras everything else you need in one area, a good selection of hotels, with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants all within easy walking distance....and Protaras has great beaches too. From here, its just a short drive/ taxi/bus ride to Agia Napa. Its not all booze cruises and lager louts, but it does have some good beaches, bars and restaurants, and also has Europes largest water park. In the heart of Agia Napa is a 14th century monastery, which is worth a look at.

If you can hire a car, then travel to The Troodos Mountains, and visit some of the pretty mountain villages, or drive into Lefkosia ( Nicosia), and stroll through the old town, along to Ledras Street, where the viewpoint across to the /Turkish occupied North has now been opened, and you can now stroll through this area, and still see some of the older buildings, which still bear the battlescars of the war in 1974.

Drive through past Lemesos ( Limassol) and take a look at Kolossi Castle, and a little further on is the Amphitheatre at Kourion. About 40k further on you start to reach the outskirts of Paphis, where you can visit Aphrodites Rock, and Aphrodites birthplace, and when you reach Paphos, you can visit the fort in the harbour, and here, there are several mosaics too...and just a little further on, there are The Tombs Of The Kings.

Protaras is really a lovely place to stay, but as I said before...fairly modern. You can drive out of Protaras in the opposite direction, through Kapparis and visit the little viewpoint/zoo where you can look through binoculars to see the ghost town of Famagusta in the distance across the U.N. buffer zone. There is a lot of information here too about the Turkish invasion, and the occupation of the north of the island.,

Whatever you do, I'm sure you will have a wonderful time here. Its very hot here, and we are currently experiencing drought conditions, as we havent had any substantial rain here for a couple of years, but this doesn't appear to be affecting the tourist industry in any way.

I live in Xylofagou, about 8K from Agia Napa.

    Edit:

Ooops! Sorry! I should have said that if you do cross over the border in Lefkosia ( Nicosia) you must have your passport with you.

  2. use the local buses to travel the area very cheap

do a day trip into Famagusta and Kyrenia Northen Cyprus use a guide
