Question:

Things to do in Scotland?

My friends and I are going to Scotland in July for about 10 days (8 nights). We're staying in Edinburgh, but visiting Aberdeen and Glasgow (among other places) So I guess I had a few questions about our trip.

1. What kind of weather should I be dressing for? And are there certain clothing items I should leave at home because they would pin me as being just "too-American?"

2. What are some great places to visit? I mean, restaurants, shops, museums, botanical gardens, pubs, everything. Are there some places only the Scottish know about?

Thank you for all your help.

july should be a hot month.

    please enjoy your stay

  2. Edinburgh is the most beautiful of the 3 cities but the people are more reserved than those in Glasgow.

    In Edinburgh :-

    Visit The Castle.

Botanical Gardens - You take number 27 bus to trinity from Hanover Street to get there.

The Gallery of Modern Art is nice - the cafe is really cool too.

If you have a car - drive to Callander and Loch Katrine - beautiful on a sunny day - you can take a boat across it.

Also nice to look across at the forth rail bridge at North Queensferry and eat outside on a warm day.

Aberdeen - Stonehaven is nice - you can walk around the old harbour and also Aberdeen beach is nice too - but a little cold. You can eat ice cream and watch the boats go in and out.

I recommend Wagamamas in Glasgow - delicious Japanese food - so lovely and quick service.

  3. July ought to be warm, but this is the UK where weather is changeable so anything can happen ... I would take clothing to suit a daytime temperature of 20-28 degrees Celsius, and some rainy days ... I'd leave any really brightly coloured clothing (shirts with palm trees, brightly coloured shorts) at home ... we tend to dress more conservatively ... you might see some men in shorts and sandals, but most British men would probably prefer slacks or jeans with trainers ... women wear shorts and those three-quarter length trousers with T-shirts and tops ... in fashion this year for women are skirts and dresses made from floral print fabrics with gathers (a bit like ra-ra skirts if you remember them) ... definitely do not bring bum-bags or f***y bags or whatever you call them, they're completely out of fashion ... women tend to use either handbags with short straps that they put over their shoulder so that the bag is under their armpit, or small bags with a long strap that they can hang crosswise over their shoulder ... lots of people do use small backpacks or daypacks but I wouldn't advise them for crowded places as they're too easy to steal from ... definitely DO bring a light waterproof coat and an umbrella (bring both because it can be windy, especially in Edinburgh) ... also bring at least one warm jumper or fleece as you can get cooler days and it can get chilly in the evening

there's loads and loads of places to visit in both Edinburgh and Glasgow ... too many to list and I'm sure there's websites which will do a far more efficient job of it than me
