I am a student and although planning on working full-time over summer, I'd like some interesting things to do over the summer in London and the surrounding areas.

Suggestions I've had so far:

- Pride London 2008

- Notting Hill Carnival

- Mardi Gra

- Oxford tour

I would be very grateful for any suggestions. As I'm a student, I'd also appreciate suggestions for a lower budget!

Thanks guys.

  2. long britsh summer?

you must be joking mate.. summer was last week.. its over now, we had a good solid 3 day stint!

    its all downhill from here.

  3. London eye

    Madame Tussauds

    London Zoo

    Aquarium

    Duck tour

    Kew Gardens

    Covent Garden / Piccadilly

    theatre / musicals

Sightseeing - Buckingham / Kensington Palace, Parks etc.

  4. All of the government owned museums are free. They do host exhibitions that required a paid entry, but the permanent exhibits will keep you busy enough! I was just in London for a week and a half and we were only able to fit in four things a day. Make sure you know the operation hours. Coming from America, I found that lots of things in London closed early.

    Free things:

The British Museum (HUGE!) We spent hours here and didn't even finish.

Tate Modern Museum (Art Museum - amazing stuff!)

    The National Portrait Gallery

    The National Gallery

The Blek le Rat Exhibit (temporary there)

The Cans Festival Tunnel (street art exhibit in a pedestrian tunnel - also amazing! Especially if you like Banksy)

    Searching for Banksy's

Changing of the Guards (make sure you get there early! two hours for front row seats)

The parks: Hyde Park, St. James Park, Jubilee Park

    St. Paul's Cathedral

    Westminster Cathedral

    Paid Entry:

Westminster Abby (you get to see the graves of Elizabeth I, Bloody Mary, Netwon, Darwin, etc.) It's about 10 pounds to get in/adult.

5 pounds will get you standing tickets for a play at Shakepeare's Globe Theatre

    The London Eye (15.50 pounds)

The London Eye River Boat Tour. (12 pounds) I highly recommend this! You get to learn a significant amount of things on it.

The Tower of London (16.50 pounds/adult) This will take up so much of your time! It's huge! http://www.hrp.org.uk/towerofLondon/

    Madame Tussaud's

County Hall (right by the London Eye. It's the building that hosts the ticket office for the London Eye.) always has tourist attractions (exhibits: Dali World and Movieum are there right now). Prices vary with the specific attraction you want to go to.

    Tours:

There are also some tours outside of London for 70 pounds. They'll take a day, but you usually get three different destinations like Stonehenge, Oxford, Stratford, Cotswold.

Then, there are the walking tours of London that are really affordable depending on who you use. Ex: Historic Tours, Jack the Ripper tours, ghost tours

    Food:

Food was generally affordable and delicious! If you want something fast, check out Eat. and Pret a Manger. They're "ready to eat" food vendors.

    Check out:

    www.visitlondon.com (official site for London)

    www.londontown.com

If you want brochures for things, swing by an established hotel. They always have a brochure stand near the door. Take as many as you want for free. The City of London also has tourist stands around town.

Hope this helps! Feel free to email me if you have anymore questions!

  6. Summer,you missed it..it was last Tuesday!

Boat trips along the river, you get a totally different view of London.

    Plenty of attractions-Madam Tussuad's,planetarium,art galleries,theatres,museums etc(but money needed!!)

Walk or bike round some of the little back streets of town, look up at the architecture.

Do the open top bus tour(depending on the weather)

Visit colourful street markets and people watch.
