  1. I guess the best thing I could tell you about being on any racetrack, not just MX, is to stay in your line.  What I mean is don't move left or right on the track all of a sudden when someone comes up behind you, if they are fast, they will find their own line to pass you, but if shift suddenly, you might just move into the path that they are planning on using.

  2. See if you can arrange to go to the track with a friend who has a bike and knows the track and as James says always walk the track if the steward allows you to.  Sometimes on practice days they won't allow it unless you are there early before the day starts, but you are always allowed to walk the track prior to racing.  Ask the Steward if your dad is allowed to put on a vest and go out onto the track to watch you .  Some places will allow that and others may not approve.  Then get your friend to lead and you follow.

Before going out make sure you read up on the rules and know what each flag means so you don't get yourself in trouble if someone waves a flag at you.  Also let the Steward or track owner know it is your first time and they may also give you a few tips for the particular place you are riding.

If others are on the track try to hold your line when riding as it is dangerous for the faster riders to have a beginner wandering all over the place and don't panic when a bike comes up from behind as most of the people riding know exactly where they are putting the bike and if you do something unpredictable then it is dangerous. Make sure you wear the appropriate safety gear as well. Make sure you know all the safety precautions of what to do if you drop your bike on the down side of a jump so you don't end up in danger and the precautions you need to take if a rider is down.

Most of all have fun and everyone has to start somewhere and you will learn as you go.

  3. Try to go to the track ahead of time, and walk the track,

in your mind visualize where you will jump and how much room you will need,on the whoops, will you jump 2-3 or allow

your suspension to work for you,and above all don't change direction fast, 3 things to remember 1.walk the track,2.walk the track 3. walk the track.

you won't believe the difference it will make, and it will calm the nervousness...............Jim
