Think of an analogy to explain how the following cell structures (and their functions) are connected.

Nucleus

Cytoplasm

Ribosomes

Nuclear Membrane

Endoplasmic Reticulum

DNA

  1. I teach my beginning biology students to think of the cell as a city. If you do that you can see how all of their functions are connected... for example:

    Nucleus- city hall-- makes all the rules/regulations- controls the cell

    Cytoplasm- the air-- surrounds everything and touches all other organelles- provides medium for chemical reactions

    Ribosomes- factories-- essential to any cell this organelle produces proteins essential for all living functions

    Endoplasmic reticulum- the roadways- provides passageway to and from other parts of the cell- transports goods

    DNA - the living functioning organisms in the city
