Question:

Thinking about getting a Chinese Water Dragon?

I saw these things at a pet store and think they are absolutely awesome. I have since gotten to hold one quite frequently. Everytime I see one, I like them more and more and am now thinking about getting one.

I've done a bit of research. I found out what they eat (though I'm finding contradicting things here--some people say they are omnivores, some say they are carnivores) and habitat requirements.

The only thing I am seeing a problem with is habitat size. I have a 30 gallon aquarium, and I know that's nowhere near big enough. But if I were to get a small CWD, would it be suitable temporarily while I save to get a bigger aquarium or build one? I also have a reptarium (100 gallons), but I don't think it would work very well as it is made of mesh (heat and humidity wouldn't really stay in).

Also, any tips (and links to helpful sites) would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Your 30 gallon would be fine for a baby/juvenile.

Your reptarium would also be alright as long as you give him good heating and lighting. and make sure he/she is able to reach the UVB whenever needed also as long as you have a large tub of water and by large i mean like one of those long rectangle rubbermaid containers filled with water the humidty will be fine also keeping live plants in the reptarium wouldn't be a bad idea either if you need to kepp up humidity.

hope i could help you :D

  2. Chinese Water dragons are great pets and I have fond memories of owning and breeding them. They are smart lizards and full of personality.  The thirty gallon glass tank is fine for a young juvenile. With a reptarium, humidity is a little bit harder, but with proper lighting/ heating and a large plastic tub  for your dragon to drink, soak and swim it should be fine. As for Diet, mine were never interested in veggies but loved fruits, and insects with an occasional pinkie. It's imperative that you dust your insects with vitamin and calcium powder.

P.S. don't forget to buy a digital thermometer that shows humidity percentage.
