Thinking about getting garter snake...?

My children are thinking about getting a garter snake and looked online to see what kind of food local petstores could supply. An entry on the internet from a breeder said,"NO crickets." The worms the petstore has are superworms and waxworms. Would they be safe for garter snakes?

  1. If you go to any store that has them, you can just buy bait worms, You know, the night crawlers that come in the plastic can? I feed Bo those all the time and he's alright.  Also, if your up to the challenge, small frogs keep them full for a really long time, I'm talking weeks.  But frogs depend on how large the snake is, so give it a try.

  2. No, they don't eat mealworms, waxworms, or superworms. They eat earthworms and nightcrawlers, however, in the wild, their two main food sources are fish and frogs. They don't eat insects and they rarely eat rodents in the wild, but can be trained to eat rodents in captivity. So if you get a baby, start with earthworms and minnows. Don't buy goldfish. They are not healthy for reptiles. When it's big enough, you can feed it pinky mice. Rubbing fish slime on the mouse will help convince the snake to eat it.

  3. I had one and i gave him minows.

you could give it that or little frogs? maybe. idk much about garter snakes but thats what  i fed mine. and he lived and was healthy until i had to let him go in the wild.

but he was a wild snake idk about domestic garters.

  4. yes, you could also use fish bait worms. Snakes also enjoy spiders, flies, moths, and small mice.

  5. Garter snakes eat mice, frogs, small rodents as well as insects.  I would suggest feeding them a mouse once in a while and then he does not have to eat for a week or so.
