I'm thinking about Saigon, and then make my way to the coast or an island. I might only have 10-12 days, is it worth it? I know French, will it be useful at all? I guess I am a little worried about the language barrier.

Any advice for a solo female traveler will be appreciated. I've heard that Vietnam can be failry safe for solo females.

  1. Like most have said, it is very safe for foreigners. Most of the younger folks are able to communicate in English, French, or Chinese. They may not speak with perfect pronunciation, but you will understand each other.

Traveling anywhere solo is not a problem but a bit sad and boring because you are not able to share conversation and happiness. If you have open mind and open heart, you will enjoy the sceneries and the people.

I was there last Fall for ten days visited six cities. I had wonderful time, but I was a bit tired. I had to fly instead of bus or train travel.  I am planning a second trip very soon at end of this year.

Enjoy, you will have a great time.

  2. If you really feel that you should go to Vietnam, then go.Follow your dreams.Maybe while on your flight, you can listen to some instructional tapes on how to speak Vietnamese while you're at it.Or just speak English. For protection, try some self-defense classes or bring something like a stick to defend youself.

  3. i am going with my girl friend 21st may for 3 weeks, bit worried about going with her for her safety ,but end of the day how safe are we any where.Might see you over there

  4. viet nam is quite safe and friendly, just be carefull as you would in any city,[ melburn, paris ,new york] if you stay in tourest areas, mostly english and viet namese are spoken. but many young people have studied french and will LOVE to talk w/ you... also some of the very old peopl speak french... no worries about the language tourest areas are well prepared to take care of all your needs. i've been all over the country and i'm amazed to see so many young european , and austatrailian women , young women trveling alone. if you have any doubts just go up to nha trang and stay there... its the best place to go by far   and there's plenty to do.. stay at the "dong phuong "hotel on nguyen thien thaut street... they will take care of you.... check out some of the other question on viet nam on this site for more info. enjoi your adventure,

Well come to my country, Vietnam.

It is a good idea to travel to Vietnam. There are more than 2 millions people traveling here in 2005. I known many solo female here. And most of them enjoy their trips. Saigon is a big city. you can speak English, French, Chinese, Japanese here. In Saigon you can speak french, eat french food, reading French books, watching French films, and go to French Hospital... many French things here

Vietnam has beautiful beach, sunning all of year.

If you like island, you can fly to Phuquoc island (about 35 USD) this island is very beautiful, quiet, you can swim in the sea, go to primeval forest, fishing on the sea, it is a good place to relax.

If you like to go by train you can go to Nha trang beach (15 USD)

In Vietnam food is cheap and very good, with 3 USD you can have a good meal. hotel room from 7 to 12 USD is moderately good
