Question:

Thinking about leaving So Cal for the Lone Star State, good idea?

I' am a service member (US Navy to be exact) who has lived in San Diego and all over Southern Cal the last four years. I have found So Cal (particularly San Diego) to be quite charming and scenic with excellent weather. However, despite all of that and the fact that there is so much to do here, I have grown tired of the pretentious, materialistic, and shallow attitudes that many people display here (major kudos to the few people here who are not like that!). I have grown tired of the way that many people here seem to care more about looking like movie stars (i.e. women wearing those stupid oversized sunglasses that cover not only their eyes, but their entire faces; guys trying to look like and dressing up like Brad Pitt, ect.), and trying to out-do their neighbors by buying an even fancier luxury car. Anyway, despite the deep desire that I have to stay here, I have recently looked at moving to Texas, since the people there are pretty friendly and hospitable throughout the entire state. There is just as much to do there recreationally as California. Also, even though I' am a dedicated surfer and California has A LOT more wave action than Texas, I find that the state has plenty to offer when I can't go surfing. Texas is also not insanely overpopulated like California is. In fact, Texas is so big and has so much open space that I don't think that it will ever fill up (at least not in my lifetime anyway). I also have some family in Texas (one of the major reasons that I have been making regular trips there in the first place). I have found that many universities in Texas (i.e. UT Austin, TCU, Texas Tech, Baylor, Houston, Rice, Dallas, ect.) offer a better quality education than many of the schools out here. Also, rent and housing are MUCH cheaper throughout Texas. With everything as expensive as it is out here in So Cal (California in general), and the fact that I will be living on a budget while attending college after the service, I think that moving to the Lone Star State would be the better decision to make at this point. What do you think?

  1. Only thing I miss from South Cali is the weather. It is so humid and hot over here. Heat feels like Iraq but with alot of humidity. But it is pretty cheap to live over here. A one bedroom apt in Mission Viejo, CA cost me 1600 over here its $1000 cheaper.

The people are nicer over here and are not as stuck up on themselves like they are in Cali. Except for the Texas Pride thing which can get annoying. "Texas is the best state" "Everything is bigger in Texas"

Better drivers also. You don't have to worry about people running you off the freeway like they do on the 5.

It sounds like you already have made up your mind though?

  2. the people in Texas have a "look" just as much as Southern Californians do.

but in Texas its more like cowboy hats and boots

they also have as much attitude (but it is more polite)

as long as your willing to play along to fit in you will be fine.

    the weather is another matter.

  3. It sounds like you have already made up your mind about moving to Texas. Just know that 2 out of every 8 people that have packed up and left beautiful Socal have ended up moving back in a year. They usually move back after their first winter outside California.

Sure Texas is cheaper but there are no jobs there. The Texas heat and humidity will drive you nuts. You will miss the weather here, the ocean, the fake azz women, and the Brat Pitt wannabe's. Goodluck with your move. That's one less person I have to deal with on the freeway.

  4. I have lived in both So Cal (Hollywood Hills) and Texas (Dallas and Fort Worth). It sounds to me like you are over living in SD. Texas is awesome. You already know people and have been spending time there. But don't think you'll be getting away from pretentious attitudes. They exist everywhere. Texans are proud of being in Texas- so you'll have a lot of that Texas pride **** to deal with.

But I really had a good time in Dallas and have conidered moving to Austin. Fort Worth  was a little slow for me, but it's a nice place to live in you want to slow down a bit.

PS I am moving to back to So Cal only this time SD. Maybe you can help me:http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...
