  1. depends on what you like to do.  Personally I would say Seward.  I grew up there and it's absolutely beautiful there.  its a smallish town, but it's up and coming lately.  its a costal city, with a road out to all other major cities.  It's South Central Alaska so most places are easy to get to from there.  It has the Sea Life Center, the rail road, the cruise ships dock there in the summer, a drive up Glacier that you can get up close to.  Boasts a great fishing fleet, AVTEC which is a great School to look into.  Tons of trails to get into, great camp grounds, and so many sites to see.  4th of July is the high light of summers! the streets close down for the Mt. Marathon race, which is the mountain that over looks Seward.  the streets are lined with vendors, food, and smiling faces.

the next place would be the capitol.  its equally beautiful here. But no road in or out.  You have to either fly in or ferry it.  much to do and see just like Seward, just minus the train and road.
