Question:

Thinking about playing Magic the Gathering again...?

I use to play back in the early 90's and sold all my cards in 97, I had quite a few rare ones worth tons, but thats another story.

My question is I am thinking/going to get back into Magic the Gathering and I am not sure were to start. I am sort of overwhelmed with how many expansions are out now in comparison to when I use to play.

So where should I start? I figured I would start with Shadowmoor and 10th edition and then move UP from there. Just looking for some advice.

  1. I'm an old school player, and went to one of the type 1 tournaments locally and all the new cards just blew me away!  I think the last set I bought anything out of was "Warriors of Kamigawa" or something like that.  Not to say the old cards can't hold their own still, but if you're wanting to just casually play, jump in wherever you can find a good deal.  If you want to do the tournaments, I'd say save your money.  New sets come out far too often to keep up and have kick butt decks.

  2. The new sets are fun and have cool abilities thats new just to that block. (ex:Wither = does damages in -1/-1 counters). The oldies are really powerful cause it was just overwhelmed with power cards. If you want to get back in, i would say jump into a draft tournament at the a local card game shop or find some people that play so you can get the hang of some of the new cards and sets that came out after you left.

  3. Well, what I did when I started about 8 years ago is I bought the $30 big box set. It comes with a healthy amount of booster packs, card holder boxes, and a healthy amount of lands. I  can't quite remember if the big box gives you a premade deck. But if you were to buy a premade deck I suggest you tear it apart and make your own, better deck. If you have any other questions you can contact me through email.

  4. eh, the games sucked for years . .  . back in the early days it was properly balanced for a fun game . . . then they tried to update it and make more moeny by releasing new cards to blow away any deck, and it became a rediculous corporate cash cow instead of an enjoyable game. .. .  . save your money
