  1. For the less traditional methods and stuff, i would have to go with muay thai. Some judo places still have traditional roots, but definetely they are becoming more and more scarce.

Muay thai will have a LOT of body conditioning, punching and kicking a bag, and contact sparring. The thing that i dislike about judo, is many judo places (that i have come across) dont spar with strikes, only with grapples, in real life people are going to try to punch and kick you, they arent going to just grapple.

Either art is good however, if you mixed the principles of both together, they would compliment each other greatly in my opinion.

    Hope this helps.

  2. "i didnt like the whole you have to be obediant and bow down thing"

Unfortunately  you will find most martial arts, Japanese anyway involve being submissive to the sensei.  At the end of the day is it really that much of an issue? do you have a problem with authority or something? All you are doing is paying respect to your teacher.

As for which ones better, theres no real answer to that, everyone will have their own biases, me for example would suggest Jiu Jitsu, It's similar to Judo in the sense you do throws, Locks, strangles etc. but also do a lot of grappling, close quaters and striking as well.  It does put more emphasis on defence rather than attack. so lots of counter moves and body manipulation.

Muay Thai does look awesome, it is definately something I have been thinking about doing, as I said above Jiu Jitsu concentrates mor on defence, so I want to do a martial art that focuses on striking and offence.

Best thing to do, look up some clubs near you and go to a tester session for each, normally the first session is free, see how it goes and if you like one of them, great! :)

  3. Judo can be pretty traditional. If you find a good place like the place I go to they don't  do to much. They just make us bow down to them at the beginning and end of each class. Thats it for us though but I've heard other judo places are even more so based around respect and bowing and fixing your gi and calling your teacher sence and so on........ Judo is fun though if you don't mind taking falls over and over.. Muay Thai on the other hand at least where I go is much more layed back. No bowing or anything. As for fighting it's kick boxing with knees and elbows so you will learn to fist fight good but it can be kind of brutal. I'm sure you can do it if your tuff enough though. You can't really compare judo and Muay Thai. They are two different parts of the fight. If you find a place with a good ground game then I think judo is better cause all you gotta do is get past the punchs and you are in your world. If you learn Muay thai and someone like a judo guy gets a hold of your body you might be screwed. Both together would make a great well rounded fighter.

  4. Sounds like you are looking for a workout without a lot of 'formality' and by your choice of Martial Arts also some self-defense skills. Muay Thai is a good STRONG  method it has it's own formalities as does Judo being Japanese based as Karate is. You might want to try a Kung Fu school the Chinese systems tend to be looser than The Japanese also if available in your area The Flilipino Martial Arts are a lot of fun and EXTREMELY effective as well. Go watch at several schools and choose the one that feels best to you. Good Luck
