Question:

Thinking about studying abroad at NUI Galway?

I'm going to be a freshman at Truman State University (in Kirksville, Missouri) and in my sophomore year I would like to study abroad at NUI Galway in Ireland. I'm a Health Sciences/Pre-Med major. I have a couple questions about it. Is this a good school for me? About how much is it going to cost me for a semester? If I have scholarships, can I used them for studying abroad here? What's it like in Galway? Are they people friendly? Is there a lot to do? What's the grading system like? Basically anything you could tell me about the school or the city will help. Thanks!

  1. If you're going there next fall, I might see you there :-) I'm hoping to study there, too. All I can tell you is that the people I know who have studied there said they absolutely loved everything about the experience- the professors, students, the city... good luck in college this year!!

  2. First of all, we NEVER refer to third-level educational establishments as 'schools' in Europe. So get out of that habit right away. Refer to them as universities or colleges. There is a world of difference between school and university over here.

To find out how much it will cost you, contact the Registrar. Chances are it will be considerably less than anything you might pay in the US. I don't know if you can transfer scholarships. The marking system is different, you are not spoonfed, you do projects, submit the work and are marked.

Galway is great for students. Great social scene, pub life, friendly people. The only downside to Galway is that its location means that it tends to be rather wet during the winter.

  3. hey

yeah galway is a great city theres plent to do and excellent nightlife.

some of my friends go to the nui and they love everything about it.

as far as i know you cant use american schlorships over here and it will probly cost you quite a lot to study here as you would need new text books etc. and rents are very expensive especially for students.

    good luck with everything

  4. I haven't attended Galway but have been to NUI Maynooth. The NUI's are excellent but they each have there own wbesites and you can have a look at the staff profiles for the relevant departments and see which faculty is most suited to you.

It costs a few thousand per semester not including accomodation.

You would have to ask your scholarship body. It would be up to them, not the university.

Galway is a great place with a fantastic social life. The people tend to be friendly but there are always exceptions.

The workload is apparently less then you guys have but it is marked harder to make up for it. Generally on the international circuit Irish universities are meant to be more difficult than American.
