I want to get a pet lizard but i am not so wild about keeping crickets in my house. Does anyone know of some herbivorous lizards that are somewhat easy to care for and easy to buy in Canada

  1. I had a leopard gecko and i never noticed a hole going through his head? If not a Leo, then maybe a Bearded Dragon.

  2. Hello; both Gargoyle Geckos and Crested Geckos can be kept on a complete powdered diet quite successfully without having to deal with crickets or worms.

While some keepers that feed 'Crested Gecko diet' to their Gargoyles and Cresteds also offer insects on a semi-regular basis; several of my friends who breed them feed their Gargoyles and Cresteds 'Crested Gecko diet' by T-Rex exclusively, and they have many healthy, happy animals that are a testament to how well that stuff works. ;)

Both species are absolutely wonderful to work with, good tempered, small, interesting looking, and relatively low maintenance. Here are care sheets for them both, in case you are interested:

I hope this helps, and if you have any further questions at all on the subject; please feel free to message me and I will be more than happy to assist you. :)

    Good luck!

  3. Well you won't be keeping crickets for long since they tend to die within a few days of getting them... That said I have a leopard gecko and everyone said they have to eat crickets with an occasional meal/wax worm. He won't touch crickets and thrives on 3-5 super worms a day along with 2 or 3 wax worms every other day.

So my advise, get a leopard gecko and feed it super worms and don't worry about crickets. It's a huge misconception that they have to live on crickets. And yes I realize they aren't herbivorous, but they are easy to care for.

Oh and don't think that super worms and meal worms are the same they aren't. The meal worms have to be fed sparingly due to the chitlin (outer shell) which can cause impaction in a reptile and lead to death.

  4. Leopard Geckos are a very good first time reptile and they dont actually need crickets. They can live their life on mealworms and its proven by many breeders that i personally met. They can also eat 1 mouse pinkie when they're older but its not reccommended to do so to much, wax worms can be offered at least once or twice a week. I have been keeping my leopard geckos on mealworms for months now without any crickets and they're 100% fine and healthy. There are also some leos that can eat refrigerated crickets, and freeze dried food items.

There are many "lizards" out there that arent hard to care for and one of them are crested geckos and they dont need crickets to feed on.

  5. Yes, uromastyx lizards only eat vegetation and are readily available. Just Google "uromastyx" and you'll find pictures and great info.

  6. Skinks also need crickets as the main staple in their diets. Bearded dragons are somewhat herbivorous, however the still need crickets in their diet.  If you don't want to keep crickets, just buy the number you need least say 20 for a week and toss them all into the tank (as long as the lizard isn't a baby) the lizard will eat when hungry and you won't have to keep an extra tank with crickets.

  7. Ok first off feeding all worms can cause impaction. Wax worm are way too high in fat and should rally only be given to sick animals that need to gain weight or as a treat. Super worms have a hard exoskeleton that causes impaction. LEOPARD GECKOS NEED CRICKETS. It is true that crested geckos and gargoyle geckos can be kept on a complete powdered diet with no crickets, but some of them will not eat the powder diets that well in which case people have to do crickets. There is alot of questions on what is the uromastyx`s true diet. Some say veggies and crickets others say there liver can`t diegest the protein in the crickets. In my option they don`t need the crickets they can live fine without it if put on a high quality diet or veggies and fruits. Also there is no doubt that the iguana does not need any animal protein but they do get 6 feet full grown and are not an easy lizard.

  8. Iguanas eat the store bought jelly squares, they can be vegan as well but it's a matter of what they need. They can get pretty big.
