How are the overall job prospects for mechanical engineers and what are some good areas to look to specialize in for the best job prospects (in the USA, particularly Alabama, if anyone can be so specific)?

Lots of job prospects for you out there as a ME.  Now Huntsville would be the best place to target for a job.  The rest of Alabama is quite lacking in jobs or pay.
