I am considering acquiring a new 5.1 A/V Receiver. I want to know if it is possible for the receiver to output all sound (including bass) through 2 speakers if I choose the 2 channel output option. I know the bass is output through the subwoofer when using 5.1 channels.

  1. Most A/V receiver have the option to operate as two channel receiver depending on the audio setting you choose. There should be a setting where you can turn off the subwoofer and the bass region will be re-directed to the left and right speaker. In this case you will hear it as a normal stereo receiver. Before you buy, I suggest that you see and study first the operating manual and take note of the options you want.

  2. If you go for any of the current Onkyo range, 505,506,605or 606, they will cope with just stereo sound, all the speakers on any system can, and do carry bass as a normal stereo, the quality of that bass depends on the type of speaker used. The sub only increases the bass as, and when volume/frequency dictates.

The Onkyo range has an automatic set-up, so when everything is in place, activate the set-up mode, it will detect the quantity and location of speakers and adjust accordingly. They are also capable of anything from stereo up to 7.1 sound, therefore extra speakers can be installed as and when required.

  3. The new issue of "Home Theater" magazine came out and it is all about AV receivers.  I strongly suggest you get it to do some research.
