Thinking of doing some volunteer work, anyone got any advice?

At the end of the year i want to go abroad and do some volunteer work but i don't really know much. Can someone share their experiences, is it worth doing, what should i be careful of, general tips etc.

I regularly volunteer for homes for humanity, you actually work hand in hand with carpenters to build homes for underprivileged families or persons displaced by disaster, ect. Its very full filing and an awesome workout!

I volunteer at the Science Center. It's not that bad. All you do is science experiments and help people find their way around the building.
