Thinking of going kayaking this weekend. Never been before?

I just have a few questions:

I'm intending on kayaking down a river or possibly a lake.

1.) Would I be able to transport two tandem kayaks on top of my Jeep Wrangler and how would I do this?

2.) Should we get training or could we rent the kayaks and start immediately and just learn on our own in shallow water?

3.) How would we get back up the river to where we parked once we kayaked down it?

  1. Firstly you want to get professional instruction before you go out kayaking. The numbers of deaths are increasing and is really bad for the sport. You can become a fatality in water that is no more than a few inches deep. Learning the basics is the first step to a great time!

There are racks that can hold tandem kayaks for a Jeep Wrangler

    GET TRAINING... very very important

Park DOWN river and then walk the way back up. If you go with a kayaking service they will do this for you (or bring you back... your choice).

Get as much information as you can. I would recommend this great resource.

Have yourself a great (and safe) time out there.!

  2. Bad idea! Kayak and canoe fatalitiy numbers are rising. Inexperience and inadequate equipment are sited as causes. Tandem kayaks are difficult to paddle. Find a watersports school and take some lessons. Many offer Saturday and Sunday lessons. They will supply the necessary gear. River runners organize 'shuttles' to move cars. Hire a local to take your Jeep to the take-out. You need two cross bars on the top of your Jeep. Tie the bow and stern of the kayaks to the bumpers. Strap the kayaks to the cross bars. Do not use rubber 'bungees'. Check you load after a mile or two.
