  1. Well, honestly, flying is by far the quickest and cheapest option.

Other than that, I recently heard you can drive from England to the North of France (I'm not sure though and even found it strange) and from there you should drive to Spain without problems. But it might take an eternity, although it might be fun since you will be with friends. I don't think it would be very expensive. Most of the money will be spend on gas. You need to check how many miles you will be driving.

  2. Well, all things considered, if you want to take a car, you're going to need to go by boat, too, since you can't drive over the Channel.  Um, not sure if you can transport a car by train, but I would think you might...it's going to be expensive either way.  Just take the ferry from  Plymouth to Santander, and then the train to wherever your grandparents are.  If they are in the south, and you have the time, take a few stops along the way...Madrid, Toledo, Córdoba, and Sevilla are all on the route south towards the Costa del Sol, (where, I am guessing, they are...so many retirees there...) and can also be combined with any other trip you might have to take, although there might be a detour or two along the way, depending on the end location.

Flying is going to be faster, and probably cheaper, though.

depends on which way you choose to go, how much petrol is, and how long you stop in various places.
