Question:

Thinking of moving from NS to Toronto ?

We are looking at moving to Toronto from NS. I am from Halifax, he is from Cape Breton, we currently reside in CB. He lived in Toronto for 12 years, and I have only visited twice on course, stayed downtown and found it overwhelming. I haven't given the suburbs a shot. We have 2 children, 10 and 7. I am an Executive Assistant and found there are alot of employment opportunities in Toronto; however, is the market saturated with available workers?? That's concern number one. He has a great job opp waiting for him on arrival, so that's not a concern. I'm also curious to hear stories from others who have made the move from Halifax to Toronto, and if they found it was a bit of "culture shock" getting used to the larger city. Also, what areas are good for raising 2 young boys - we'll be renting - preferably a home/flat and not in a high rise building. Other than that, I think I would enjoy a good transit system, as Halifax doesn't have such! Thanks in advance for any info!

  1. I can't answer all your questions but I can give you a few tips. If you found Toronto overwhelming, there are many outside cities such as Oakville you can live in and easily commute. My husband and I live in St. Catharines which is about 1.5 hrs away, and he is originally from Cape Breton (although I am Ontario born and raised). Yes it will be a culture shock for you, as Toronto is alot different than Halifax and WAY different than CB. But I'd imagine if your husband was able to leave CB and live in TO for 12 years you should be ok. The transit system is awesome, if you live outside the city you can take the GO into the city and it is cheap and easy. I can't really help you with the job situation but I think if there seems to be many postings on job searching websites in your field then you should be ok. The thing that will be the most different for you would be the TRAFFIC! There is nothing like that in all of Nova Scotia as far as traffic. All I can say about where to live is make sure you research the area first, there are bad areas around TO and Scarborough.
