Thinking of setting up a home security company that deal in cctv.?

If im installing cctv in peoples homes do i need a SIA cctv licence?? Its not a public place so i dont think i will but not sure.

Are there any other licences/memberships i will need to get?

  1. That would depend on where you are. I would check with your local electrical authority as well as the municipality.

    In British Columbia there has been no previous requirement for security licencing, however I believe they are looking at changing that.

    To install cctv in homes, you do not need any licenses.

    a) SIA CCTV license is for cctv operators, those people who watch cctv cameras that cover public places.

    b) stick to low voltage systems, e.g. cameras that use 12v

    c) If you make any changes to the homes electrical wiring, e,g. making a fused spur, making connections with mains cables or removing or installing wall / light sockets etc.. you will need a qualification called 'Part P' which is related to the 16th edition for electrical wiring

    Dont worry about that last point, stick to 12v systems and most cameras and recorders plug directly to the wall socket using a standard plug so no qualifications needed apart from common sense.
