Question:

Thinking of starting Muay Thai?

Thinking of starting training in Muay Thai. I have no previous experience in any martial arts - but i'm interested in learning something that provides a good work out and self defense skills. Is MT right for me?

Does anyone know good places in the NYC area (specifically Manhattan or Brooklyn) that would be good for a beginner?

Also, I'm a little out of shape - should I get in a little better shape before I start? Or should i just go for it?

  1. Everyone seems to have covered this answer. However I would stress that, there is never a limit to how prepared physically you can be, so some extra running, stretching or weights would not do you any harm.

  2. MT is an awesome sport and martial art. It is pretty brutal, and your chins and forearms will take a beating. In my opinion, it is worth it. Your kicks will be absolutely brutal and your shins will be baseball bats over time.

I wouldn't worry about getting into shape prior to joining. Just go, and get in shape by training.

  3. Muay Thai (the art of eight limbs) is a great martial arts. Like any Martial arts it will give you a work out. the more you learn an try the harder the workout. They call it the art of eight limbs because of the extensive use of your hands, shins, knees, and elbows. there are many different variations of MT so if you find a school go sit in on a couple classes see what they do. your the only one who can decide what is best for you. as for any schools they have them in a lot of places mainly big cities. you can find some one the Internet just type in the MA and where you live. That should get you what you want. Also don't worry about being in great shape before you start classes. The classes will help you get in shape.
