Thinking of taking up surfing?

Question

I have never tryed it. It was actually my grandma's idea i guess she thinks it would be cool too. Im 15 and i have 1 friend that surfs but i dont want to practice where people are. I dont mind practicing with her but i dont have a surf board and i dont even know the first thing about surfing what do you all think I sould do??
