I am on the third floor of my apartment complex, corner unit, I have a 2 year old black lab that stays at home while I'm at work, temperatures are supposed to reach 100 tommorrow and I dont have AC, I only have one fan, what are some ways that I can assure that he will be able to keep cool while I'm gone? Anything will help.

  1. theres nothing you can do but leave the fan on or get rid of the mutt

  2. Put some ice in a big plastic container and let the fan blow across it .....something like a toddlers pool. If he's you typical lab..........you just may find him in it.............all the best........ya got a friend who can stop in and see him? nite

  3. Good Lord, poor dog.

You should have gotten a window unit AC...

You can also buy floor model Air Conditioner units now at like Home Depo...They are about four hundred dollars and do not have to be installed in the window...

Take the day off from work, call in sick, go get the dog an AC and make sure he can not get to it to destroy it while you are gone working next time you work...

Make sure you do not put the fan where the dog can knock it over and it lays flat on the floor while still on.

  4. Is it possible to get a cross ventilation going in your apartment? With a corner unit, I would think you'd probably have windows at the opposite ends of the apartment.

Early tomorrow morning when the temps are still in the low 60s, open up all the windows in your apartment and set the box fan in one of the windows facing out. This will pull all the warm air out of your apartment and replace it with the cool air. Once the internal temperature of your apartment has dropped, button up the house as tight as you can. Close all the drapes, and the doors to rooms that are on west or south walls. Shut off the computer, turn off the lights, and kill any power that is totally unnecessary in your apartment.

The interior rooms should stay around 76 degrees which is more than tolerable for your dog.

  5. Leave him plenty of water. If you have tile floors (not wood) you could leave a damp towel out for him to lay on. Leave windows open for a cross breeze. You can even leave a bowl of ice cubes out for him to chew on. They won't stay ice for very long, but at least he'll have them for a little while. Try not to worry...dogs tend to sleep a lot in the heat. I think they just know instinctively that they should just rest.
