Third-consecutive lay day called for Oakley Pro Bali – Surfing news
Round 3 of the Oakley Pro Bali failed to get underway on Monday, June 24, 2013, as the event organisers deemed the small one-to-two foot waves gracing the main event site of Keramas in Bali, Indonesia, unsatisfactory.
Holding on to their intent of giving the green signal for the recommencement of the fifth of ten stops on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour only after observing an improvement in the swell, the event organisers are
optimistic about the surfing conditions in coming days.
“Small surf today and we’ve called a lay day for competition,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge, said. “Swell projections have the biggest system of the window moving into the area in the coming days so we’ll be back early tomorrow morning to make
another assessment.”
Both the surfers and fans of the sport are likely to be feeling a bit anxious after finding the event on hold for the third-consecutive day.
The halt in the proceedings came after three continuous days of exhilarating action, as the competition completed its first-two rounds in excellent conditions.
On the very first day of the Oakley Pro Bali, the crowd got treated to a series of enthralling performances and huge upsets, with the relegation of 11-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater from America and reigning ASP World Champion Joel Parkinson from Australia
to Round 2 following their Round 1 defeat being the highlight of the day.
Both the surfers, however, made amends for their Round 1 loss by bouncing back strongly in Round 2, consequently making their way into the third round.
The battle between Hawaii’s John John Florence and Sebastian Zietz was another highlight of day one, with both the surfers putting on a great show during their 30-minute bout. While Florence prevailed in the battle and advanced directly into the third round,
his rival is all set to face him after surviving his Round 2 heat.
When the competition resumes, Australia’s Taj Burrow will take on Brazil’s Miguel Pupo in the opening heat of Round 3.
The next call for the recommencement of the event will be made at 6:30 am on Tuesday.
