Third day lucky for Singapore fencers at the Cadet World Cup – Fencing Recap
Singapore’s women sabre team snatched three gold medals in the third day of the Cadet Fencing World Cup on February 26. The whole day comprised of four events and three final rounds that were conquered by the Singapore fencers, the final event earned them
a bronze.
Singapore’s women sabre team comprised of Charlotte Li Ling Teo, Mei Li Yeo, Tan Janice and Hanan Adnan and Mei Li being the team captain.
In the final round, the Singapore women beat Hong Kong with a six-hit lead at 45-39 score line. This win was of great importance for the team, which comprised of the winner of the individual sabre event. The team captain, Mei Li expressed her happiness for
their victory by saying, “This win means a lot to the team and will be a big boost for our confidence when we travel to Bangkok next week for the Asian Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships.”
In the women’s foil final round, the face-off had taken place between Singapore’s team A and team B. The women foil A team, comprised of the Individual event winner Liane Ye Ying Wong and finalist Lynn Yeo accompanied by Qi h*i Lim and Fu Zhi Ying Denise,
as they defeated the B team. The A team proved to be stronger for their counter-parts to conquer, thus winning with 45-28 score line.
The team captain, Liane, commented that such score line could not reflect the fact that how intriguing and tough the match had been and hats off to B team for putting up a good fight. The women foil bronze medal was taken up by the Hong Kong team A.
The third and the final gold of the day was for the Men’s sabre team winners and it was also captured by the Singapore men fencers on defeating the Hong Kong Team A in a tight score fight of 45-41.
The winning team’s captain, Clive Leu said, “The team really wanted this win badly as all of us were disappointed with our individual performances earlier in the competition.”
The bronze medal was won by the men fencers of the Pasir Ris Crest Secondary School after trouncing the Hong Kong Team B in the play-off.
The final event of the day was the Men’s epee team event in which both the top two medals were taken home by the Hong Kong fencers leaving Singapore with a bronze medal at the end. The overall medal tally of the Singapore women fencers shows that they won
seven gold medals, four silver medals and five bronze medals out of the total of nine events held in the CFWC until now.
The final day, February 27 comprised of three events namely women’s epee team, men’s epee team and men’s foil team but the results are yet to be released by the fencing authorities.
