Third round of Alfred Dunhill Links Championship underway: Live leaderboard
The 2010 Open champion, Louis Oosthuizen, has shot back into contention with a strong performance at the start of the third round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland. Overnight co-leader, Tommy Fleetwood of England started off the day with
a birdie on the opening hole and rose to top of the leaderboard but has now dropped to third place after level-par holes on his front nine. He is playing the Carnoustie today.
Michael Hoey, the Northern Irishman, who has been on top of the leaderboard in the opening two rounds, is still on top with two birdies and a stunning eagle at par-five, 14th. This is Hoey’s second eagle in the tournament as he has been playing
splendid all-round golf this weekend.
Oosthuizen, who is attempting to break his winless streak in the season and was the leader on the opening day of the event, is now poised at an outright second, trailing Hoey by two shots. Starting off from the front nine on the Old Course at St. Andrews,
Oosthuizen carded three birdies before making the turn.
Graeme McDowell, another Northern Irishman who won the 2010 US Open, has also decided to take on the offensive, pulling in a stellar front nine on the third day. With an eagle at par-four, 3rd, McDowell carded two more birdies and is now four-under
through just five holes of the day.
Rory McIlroy has already made the turn carding three birdies on the front nine and dropped just one shot. He scored another birdie after the turn and is three-under for the moment, six shots behind the lead. McIlroy, although not a big fan of links golf,
probably wants to break the psychological barrier he has built around himself. He suffered a disappointing finish in the Open Championship at St. George’s this year.
Defending champion, Martin Kaymer, who was steadily climbing the ladder until yesterday, has now dropped to a joint 15th after a poor third round. Playing the front nine on the Old Course, Kaymer has conceded just one birdie and a bogey so far.
Luke Donald started the day with blistering birdies on the opening holes of the front nine at the Old Course and is currently four-under, as he still has to make the turn for the back nine.
