Marcel Siem, the brilliant performer of the Dubai Desert Classic, has done it again, pulling in a stellar four-under, 68 on the third day.
He is now resting at a joint second with Whiteford and Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Gonnet.
His whirlwind round included two consecutive double-bogeys, eight birdies, two dropped shots and a glistening eagle at par-five, 18th.
Whiteford, who rose to the top of the leaderboard on the second day, had a sloppy afternoon on the third, when he fell for two terrible double-bogeys.
He made up the loss with six birdies but another two bogeys destroyed his attempts to extend his lead through the third round.
He is now trailing the leader by one shot and will have to work his way up on the final day to land his maiden title on the European Tour.
The 31-year-old Scot carded a strong four-under, 68 on the second day to grab the halfway lead of the event, hoping to clinch his first European Tour title of the career.
He said after first round, “I wouldn't say the swing feels brilliant, but sometimes that's when you play your best golf, when you're struggling a wee bit. I just need to concentrate. To be ten under is very good, but I wouldn't say I'm overly confident. I just need a good round tomorrow to be in contention come Sunday”.
Also, one of the day’s better performers turned out to be Marc Warren who surged to the top of the leaderboard with a four-under, 68, edging past the earlier scorers of the day.
His round included four birdies, one eagle and two bogeys on the back nine.
Warren is tied with five other players for the fifth spot on the leaderboard. He is accompanied by Marcus Fraser, who is desperate to land his first European Tour title of the season.
Fraser carded rounds of three-under, 69 on all the three opening days and is hoping to perform better on the final day to lift the title.
Also poised on the fifth spot, is the Thai Prom Meesawat who pulled in a jaw dropping eight-under, 64 on the second day and had thrown in stiff challenge to the leader Whiteford.
