What is the difference between a router and a DSL modem. I have this device hooked up to my phone line that gives me a broadband connection to the internet. Is that a modem or a router?

When I tried to call my internet provider about sending me a second one to hook up to my other phone jack; it was like I was talking another language. I thought I understood all this stuff but apparently I don't.

  1. you can get modem with router. Or you can have modem and then hooked up to the router. what products you have? Have you got ADSL Modem router or you have ADSL Modem only.

  2. Most modern modems are routers. They are interchangable. The definition of a router is a device which simply connects two or more networks together, therefore your home network needs a router to connect to the Internet. A modem works at a lower level to convert computer signals to phone signals.

They are simply the same device nowadays. If you then choose to go wireless, you have the option of replacing the modem\router with a modem\router\wireless access point - or you can have them as seperate devices. It entirely depends on the hardware you have been provided.

  3. Your ISP (Internet Serviced Provider) wires to one location in  your house (business?) and at that location only there is a modem.  If you want additional computers you can hook a router, wireless or not, to that modem to connect additional systems.  Routers can have places for 5 or as many as 24 wired computers.

Wiring computers can be a pain since you have to somestimes drill and punch holes in the wall so many people now use wireless.  There are many kinds of wireless.  Fastest currently is "N".

You would buy an "N" router and all your computers that you would connect wirelessly would need "N" adapters if you want them to connect at the highest speed.  If they have older cards its OK, they will just be a slower speed.

Faster Routers and adapters are more expensive than slower ones.

Make sure you use the DSL filters they give you on your other phone lines.  They are important.

Technology is what makes me money.  :)

  4. it is modem, since modem is used with telephone lines to give the speed less than 56kb. and,

router is used with telephone to give the speed more than 56kb.

yu must have an adsl light in yur modem

  5. If you are calling this technical I hate to see what you would do when its really technical. That is a modem.

  6. That device is a Modem,(Modulator/Demodulator) a Router is used in a network, more than 1 computer connected. Some Modems also can be used by more than one computer and or wireless so have a dual use. Hope this explains it

  7. ADSL modem is a device to translate the data from your telephone line to make it Internet,, like the fax modem

Router is a device have a many jobs , like NAT, DMZ, or make 2 dsl work togther throug it

but some ADSL Modems have NAT and DMZ options so they call it ADSL Router!
