Question:

This blood thinner..?

My grandma said her doctor told her not to take one of her prescriptions. She doesn't have her medications here at the moment, but wants me to find a picture of the pill so she knows not to take it.

She told me it is "Acumina" or "Cumina", (thats how she pronounced it) and said it is a blood thinner. She said her doctor said this, though her memory isn't that great so it could be off. It should definitely a blood thinner though. I did a google search and nothing came up, so does anyone know what medication she is talking about?

  1. Probably Coumadin, the brand name for warfarin.

  2. Dr. Beat is right except that the drug doesn't treat atrial fibrillation. Patients with afib are more prone to clotting, and that is why they are given warfarin. It doesn't treat the arrhythmia at all.

  3. It sounds like she is taking a drug most commonly known as "Coumadin" or "warfarin". It is a vitamin K antagonist that inhibits the production of clotting factors II, VII, IX and X and is used to treat atrial fibrillation or to anticoagulate patients with mechanical heart valve replacements.

    *Edit*

Yes, I understand that warfarin doesn't actually correct the arrhythmia usually an antiarrhythmic drug or cardioversion is used for that, but I thought that a thorough explanation of the treatment of afib was out of the scope of this question...

  4. Yes it is a blood thinner... But your spelled it wrong but I knew what you were talking about. Aspirin is also a blood thinner by the way.
