Question:

This chemistry question is confusing me. Please help?

A student carries out the following tests to investigate two metal oxides, P and Q.

Ok they give me 3 columns: test, observation and conclusion.

Under 'test' they put Flame test and under 'conclusion' they put P contains copper. So under the 'observation' heading I wrote A green flame. I presume that is correct?

Now this is where I get confused...

Under 'test' is says Dissolve in hydrochloric acid and under 'conclusion' it says P contains a transition element.

So what would I observe that would tell me the element is a transition one? Some transition elements would dissolve in HCl and others wouldn't.....??

This table goes on and on and I'm getting confused...

Thanks for explaining!

  1. Hey =D

Yep the first one is right.

And for the second one you might observe it turns a bright colour, as happens with most transition metals, because the ions are brightly coloured.
