we talk about ecofootprint and the smalller they are the better for the enviroment surly growing food crop in this country will not only lead to a decrease in the damage to the enviroment but also in the freshness of the food we eat I know a lot of food can only be grown aboard because of our climate but surly the foods the are suitable to grow here should be grown here

  1. farmers want to grow high value foods they can sell abroad at a higher profit. We produce British beef and export it ,then import meat from Botswana to feed the local people. Instead of growing winter foods like sprouts and swede , green beans are flown in from Kenya. To many TV chefs promoting out of season ingredients, when last did you see a recipe  for Irish stew or scotch broth.?

  2. Some of the blame is the EU and thier 'quoters', if more of something is produced they have to destroy it. Examples are a couple of years ago Dairy farmers were tipping milk away because quoters had been exceeded and it was the same with apple growers in Kent who could not even give them away, so ploughed them into the ground and pulled up alot of thier trees. At the moment the fishermen are suffing the 'quoter' rule and can't help it as how does a cod know that the trawler is above quoter on cod, so it should not swim into that net. By the time its pulled in its dead, but the fishermen have to through it back into the sea or get fined!! What a waste.

  3. The stupid politicians who are out of touch with reality.

  4. I've got to say I've yet to meet a hard up farmer. I live in the heart of Scotland and see enough of them driving around in their flaming big cars as do their off spring. 17 year olds riding around in top of the range cars. Give me a break hard up farmers. Yes there may be a few but not up where we live. I think a lot of lack of fresh foods is down to bad harvest due to the amount of rain we've had. They get paid off the government (that's money from you and I) to not grow food. In other words let the field lye fallow.
