This going to sound really stupid but how do I use a train?

Tomorrow everyone has to go to a "team working camp" by train only, I have already bought my ticket and have to get it tomorrow morning using the "FastTicket Machine" that sounds simple, but then what?

Will all the stuff be on the ticket, I don't want to miss the train and look like more of a fool than now.

Thanx people.

  1. Go onto the national rail enquiries website and use the journey planner on the home page as it will tell you the train times and where you need to change trains (if you have to on that journey) Here is the link   http://nationalrail.co.uk/

  2. If you have bought your ticket then one presumes you have already chosen the destination and train time.

Allow plenty of time in the morning to get to the ticket machine, simply insert the card you used to pay for the ticket and I think you have to put in a code which they email to you and then follow the instructions on screen.

then look on the departures screen for your train. say on your ticket it said time 0833 from A to B then you need to look on the screen for the train that departs at 0833 going to 'B'. Get on it. If you are getting off at an intermediate station (i.e. not the final destination of the train) then check that the train you are about to board actually stops at where you want to get off.

If you get totally lost ask a member of staff.

    Happy traveling!

  3. you should just be able to chose your destination, and pay.  The info will be on the ticket.  i believe you can also use the option of an open return - ie one returning several days after you leave.  Why don't you ask an attendant to help?  may be a bit tough in rush hour though.

  4. Ok you will need the referance number and credit / debit card you paid the ticket on, goto the designated train station you have chosen to collect your ticket. Inside the Ticket Hall you will see the Automated Ticket machines, follow the instructions that are on screen (collect ticket, enter referance number, insert card, use pin to verify, accept tickets) if you get stuck and there is a Gateline, then ask the Gate assistance for help.  Then you proceed to the platform once you have passed the ticket check gateline if there is one, wait on the platform for your designated train to come, board, get the seat reserved if applicable, sit back and travel to your destination.

As for what is printed on your ticket, that will help you, if it is an advanced ticket then it will say train time (which is the only train you can catch otherwise your ticket is void, unless there is a problem in which case seek out a member of staff as soon as possible) seat numer and coach, if you have a return ticket one portion will say OUT which is your outward journey and one will say RTN which is your return portion.

If you are really stuck, then do ask a member of staff, no one will treat you as a complete fool unless you ask a really obvious stupid question, in which case we may roll our eyes and give you a wise crack remark and smile at you to see if you take the bait (how longs he train, does this platform goto ..., point at train and say is this (your destination) ... all the old ones, we love them!).  Always listen for station announcements, do not just plug in your IPOD, etc and look like a lemming like most commuters on the platform and then complain that no one told them the train was late, cancelled, re platformed at last minute, because you was listening to your music rather than concentrating on what you was doing.

Most of all be sensible and you will be fine.

    Good Luck

  5. I should stick with the car, several weeks ago I enquired about a 1st class return to Manchester and they wanted over three hundred pounds..I went by car

  6. The fast ticket machine will, in my experience, spew out a large number of red and yellow credit card sized pieces of thin card. One will be your credit card receipt and will state it is such. Another may be a receipt for any booking fee you incurred, Others will be your outward and return  seat reservations. Your ticket will say 'open return' (presumably) and state the station you are leaving from and the date of travel, and your destination station. You will probably get a separate ticket for your return home, so don't loose it! Please don't worry. If you are not sure what is what, just show the whole lot to the conductor when he comes round and he will sort if for you.
