This is 2008. Why aren't there modernistic homes that are sometimes exhibited on the sci-fi channel ?

Depends on where you live...

There are not lots of people who constantly think, that thy need a talking fridge or neon lights. Speak recognition has brought nice hi-tech like features, but there is not a good AI that would manage all the systems. Most people do not have engineering degrees, so thy are not able to custom build and program gadgets. Thy lack the need to own stuff, that is sold by http://www.thinkgeek.com/ because thy nearly do not know about it.
