  1. Wow! First year and 8th grade.  Good luck.  Establish your class rules and consequences before you enter the room.  Put them up where all can see them.  Be consistent in your management plan.  Reward good behaviors, enlist students' help. Be fair, popsicle sticks with names to keep from calling on same students.  Don't try to be their "friend".  Show them you care and are willing to help.  Be firm.  Anything that can be done by a student (jobs) should be assigned to someone.  Why should you do all the work?  BE ORGANIZED before class begins, never "wing it".  Have your room completely stocked and well situated for your needs before the first day of class. I have a couple of really good First Day books to recommend as well.  Teams with team captains?  Reward the team with best attendance, or best behavior for the week, or cleanest desks, you decide.

  2. Get to know a more experienced teacher.  Get tips and tricks from that person, and others.  Later in the year, if you're having trouble, see if you can get permission for another teacher that you trust to come in and observe you and help you.  See if you can observe another teacher.

I looked for other teachers to eat lunch with and quickly figured out who had control of their classrooms that way.  Also it really helps to get adult interaction and take a break during lunch.  It may save your sanity!

  3. Harry Wong.

16 year teacher - and I read it every year prior to starting to remind myself of all the little things I need to do.
