do 3.5 mm cords have any degration level over use?..if yes how long does it take and what is the result how do you know the cords is worn out?..suppose you leave it playing for 30 years will it stop sometime due to wear out?..

  1. I've been involved in the construction of television stations and the installation of transmitters and equipment.  Used to be that long use (years) in a permanent connection at low power would build up infinitesimal corrosion that would eventually inhibit the connection's function.  Using gold-plated connections to avoid corrosion was one solution, but impractical.  With different common materials, that's rarely a problem anymore.  For consumers using 3.5mm connectors and cords for audio, the only thing that wears them out is constant plugging/unplugging of the connectors.

Theoretically?  30 years MAY have a slight effect.  Probably not.  One time of unplugging it and plugging it back in will resolve any problem IF necessary.

  2. The wire in the cord itself will not degrade if it is not handled too much.  What will eventually degrade is the metal surfaces on the 3.5mm connector.  All audio connectors get tarnished over time.  The 3.5mm connector is not a great audio connector anyway - it just has too little surface area and too little contact with the mating connector. They are prone to hums and buzzes.  RCA or XLR connectors are much better.

It pays to go out and get some contact cleaner like Deoxit and keep your connectors clean.  Clean the female connector with a common pipe cleaner and a bit of alcohol or contact cleaner..
