  1. common myth.  All mules are sterile.  They are not.  while a large protion are.. some can( about 1 in 1000) and do breed, usually unexpectedly.

A mule bred to a horse will produce either  type randomly.

  2. Mules are steril (sp?). They cannot reproduce (for the most part). There have been some cases of mules giving birth but I am not sure if that is true. So no a mule and donkey dont make a horse.

  3. So like everyone said no a donkey and mule dont make a horse.  But there have been a few cases of mules actually having foals.  See attatched atricle

    http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story...

  4. Mules cant breed so they wouldnt make anything :)

  5. Mules are sterile so they can't breed at all : )

  6. This isnt a stupid question at all.  A mule cannot reproduce so the answer is no :)  Dont ask me WHY they cant reproduce bc Iam no expert on the biology of it but I just know that for some reason the genetics dont equal up and in turn they are born sterile.  :) And regardless, even if they could a mule and a donkey would most definatley NOT make a horse.

  7. no... also, ive been told mules are barren.

  8. No, they make a hinny I thinK????

  9. Female Horse x Male Donkey = mule

Male horse x Female Donkey = hinny

They are basically the same thing, but the mare x jack seems to make more a horsey looking cross than the hinny...most people call them all mules, but there is a difference.

Mules/Hinny's are all sterile....so you can not breed them back to a horse or anything.  It has to do with the fact that they are different species, so when crossed, they become sterile.

  10. Mules are sterile so they don't breed.

    Donkey + horse = mule

    Horse + Donkey = Hinny

    Mule + Horse = 0

    Mule = Donkey = 0

  11. donkeys and mules are different species.  A male donkey (a jack) and a female horse (mare) will produce a mule when crossed.  A female donkey (jenny) when crossed with a male horse (stallion or stud) will produce a hinny which is less sturdy and finer boned than a mule and not as strong so is less popular.  Otherwise to get a donkey you breed donkey to donkey and to get a horse you breed horse to horse.

On the rare occassion (actually the figure is one in TEN thousand) that a mule does reproduce it is always with a female mule and male horse and the result is a part mule part horse that is more horse like than the typical mule.  But it is still not a horse or a donkey.

It has still not been determined how the mule that gave birth in Colorado got pregnant.  But if it is from a male donkey then it would be the first I have even heard of.

  12. No a Donkey and a Mule don't make a horse, but I'm not sure what they make. I don't no much about donkeys and mules.

  13. Mules are sterile... the breeding ends there with them

Donks and horses are the only purebreds with even number chromosomes..

Mules have odd chromosomes, which is why they are sterile

There have been documented cases , a handful, of mules procreating... only mollies, not johns.

This is rare, this isn't a common occurance and there is still testing going on as to why it happened.  Belief is that the molly has horse chromosomes, but testing is still being preformed.

The 1 in 1000 comment about mules birthing is wrong and please post your informational source for me.

  14. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/natur...

This is the most recent mule to give birth. They said it doesnt look exactly like a donkey foal or a mule foal, its kinda a mix between the two. The article explains why generally mules can not reproduce, but it can happen

I just read the poster above "short"....and read her article, I hadn't heard about that one. So disregard my comment about my post being the most recent mule giving birth

  15. "In its common modern meaning, a mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse, which is classified as a kind of F1 hybrid. The much rarer offspring of a male horse and a female donkey, is called a hinny. The term "mule" (Latin mulus) was formerly applied to the infertile offspring of any two creatures of different species. The mule, easier to breed[citation needed] and usually larger in size than a hinny, has monopolized the attention of breeders"

In the 1920s, "Old Beck", a mare mule at Texas A&M, produced a mule daughter called "Kit". When Old Beck was bred to a horse stallion she produced a horse son (i.e., the horse stallion sired horse foals). When bred to a donkey, she produced mule offspring.

Likewise, a mare mule in Brazil has produced two 100% horse sons sired by a horse stallion.

In Morocco, a mare mule produced a male foal that was 75% donkey and 25% horse, i.e., she passed on a mixture of genes instead of passing on her maternal chromosomes in the expected way."

  16. even if mules could breed, a mule + donkey would definitely not make a horse.... it would make a mule that looked more like a donkey.... it would be 3/4 donkey and 1/4 horse... hope this helps?

  17. Nealry all mules are sterile, but there are some that have been capable of reproducing.    Here's a link about one:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/natur...

Quote:  "Since 1527, (when records began on the issue) there have only been a total of 60 reported cases of mules giving birth. "

Sadly, this article does not say what the offspring is called!  It is pretty cute, though.
