  1. Cousins (also called first cousins) are people whose nearest common ancestor is a grandparent. Your mom and her cousin share grandparents. Second cousins’ nearest common ancestor is a great-grandparent, and so on.

The confusing “removed” aspect is a matter of different generations. First you name the closest relationship, i.e., cousin. The child of your cousin is your cousin once removed. (The parent of your cousin is not your cousin once removed, but your aunt or uncle.) The grandchild of your Mom's cousin is her cousin twice removed. That much I'm sure of.

But what is he to you? I think that makes him your second cousin twice removed, if I understand this right. It does get tangled up, doesn't it?

  2. Second cousin once removed.

Call your mom Dorothy, her cousin Alice, their parents Daniel and Andrew and "Line" it out:

    Daniel & Andrew = Siblings

    Dorothy & Alice = 1st cousins

    Derrick & Alyisous = 2nd cousins

    David & Adelle = 3rd cousins

So, when you have a child, "David", he will be 3rd cousin to Alice's granddaughter Adelle. You are Adelle's second cousin once removed. The "Removed" comes in because there is one level between you and Adelle.

    ================

Note 1: This assumes you mean "Alice" is your mom's first cousin, not 3C2R.

    Note 2:

    rwasham7 shouldn't answer if he doesn't understand.

Miranda T is wrong. 4th cousins are children of third cousins.

Maryn Bittner is off by one removed.

Dee is confusing degree (1st, 2nd, 3rd) with removeds.

Songbyrd is right but my explanation is shorter and clearer, IMHO.

I have WAY too much time on my hands this afternoon.

  3. 4th cousin

  4. youll be his great cousin

  5. 2nd cousin one time removed. I don't know what it means but my software labels people.

  6. It is generational.

Your mother's Cousin is a first cousin.  The first cousin's child is of the same generation as you, so that would be 'your second cousin.  Your second cousin's child is a second cousin once removed to you.   If you have a child, that child would be a third cousin since that is the grandchild or you mother, and the same generation as the person in your question.

To you, the person is second cousin, once removed.

  7. 3rd or 4th cousin, i dont understand the premises of cousins removed,

  8. He would be your 4th cousin. Your Mother's cousin is your 2nd cousin, her child your 3rd cousin & her grandchild is your 4th cousin.
