I have a basement i want to carpet. I don't know how to measure the floor to get the square footage. One floor length is 40 feet, the other is 20 feet, then 8 foot, 3 ft then a room that is 10x10. It is an odd shaped basement due to the bedrrom that was put in. How many square feet am I looking at?

  1. If you are planning on having the same carpeting installed throughout the basement (the entire basement), simply use the total length of the basement X the total width of the basement and forget the individual room measurements. One added thought - carpeting in a basement is risky due to moisture etc. I would seal the concrete slab with an approved concrete sealer/stain. Home Depot carries a good concrete sealer made by H & C....apply minimum 2 coats to ensure a good seal. Obviously, there are other brands - check with any reputable DIY center and make sure that it's a sealer.

  2. 40 x 20 = 800

    8 x 3 = 24

    10 x 10= 100

    800+24+100= 924

    924 square feet

  3. Measure the length and width of each section you are going to cover.Multiply lenght x width of each to get square footage. Then add the totals together.

  4. Take every measurement of width and length in every room. Than any carpet store can add up what the square footage is for you. But if you want to do it yourself here's the equation.

    Convert your feet into inches.

I can't help you do the equation because you didn't give proper measurements to the room.

Measure the length of the room, down the middle if necessary. Then the width. Doesn't matter if one wall is shorter or not. Do the longest parts.

Let's do the 10x10 room... easiest.

Convert them into inches. 10 feet times 12 (12 inches per foot). Equals 120 inches. Now you do the same thing again with the other wall, which happens to be 10 as well. So another 120 inches.

    Now, multiply them. 120 x 120 = 14400 inches.

Take 144000 and divide it by 144 - 100 Square feet.

If you do the 40 by 20 room. It would look like this

    40 x 12 = 480 inches. 20x12= 240 inches. Take the 480x240 = 115200 inches. Then divide 115200 by 144= 800 sq feet.

Hopefully you'll now have the equation down pat.

Carpet people can always come to your home for free and help you figure out the best equation for the room if you can't figure out how to measure it. There's no obligation to purchase either!

  5. Go with George but add about 10% to that footage and that ll give you  a rough total s/f for carpet.. This may vary w/ the width of carpet you choose.. 12 and 15 foot widths are the norm. Have a pro measure  for seam layout  according to the width  you have chosen.. They can figure it both ways in 12 and 15 ft goods.  The only other varible  might be if its a pattern carpet. Then you have to figure in pattern matches.. GL   PS  A pro will also note floor corrections that need to be addresed ( cement expansion joints etc)

  6. Can't you just have your local carpet store come and measure your floor? Or do something like have empire come and install your carpet for you.

  7. carpet is not always as simple as measuring the square footage of your area. you will be buying it based on the square footage of the carpet you buy, not the room size. roll carpet comes 12' and 15' wide. your 10x10 room is 100 sq.ft., but you will be buying a 10x12(120 s.f.) piece of carpet, if you don't want seams. it would be best to draw out your basement, include the wall measurements and take it to your carpet dealer.

If you are buying carpet squares, then s.f. would work.

    Hope that helps.
