  2. The magic number to be designated a hurricane is 74 mph sustained winds, and be a system of tropical origin.  Often, you may hear references to "hurricane-force winds" used to describe strong straight-line winds associated with severe thunderstorms - but those are not hurricanes.

  3. The standards for designating a storm system as a hurricane include more than just wind speed. It also includes origination point, barometric pressure, shape/style of storm, etc. Yes - there can be hurricane force winds, but unless those winds are in conjunction with a storm system that meets the other criteria for being a hurricane - the winds alone are not a hurricane.

    By your reasoning - the winds of a tornado would also be considered a hurricane. The wind speed is certainly fast enough - meeting the minimum requirements for a Category 5 hurricane. Would you call a tornado a hurricane? If not - why not?
