  1. ABSOLUTELY! Just look online, at the library, in book stores, and ask around in homeschool groups. Decide what you want to learn and what you need to learn, set some goals, and just mix and match materials until you have a custom curriculum that works well for you. That is what we did and it was the best choice for us. This is a good way to go about things if you learn differently in different areas (need lots of reading for English, but math is better with a DVD, need hands-on for Science, and just want to use real nonfiction books for History instead of textbooks, want to take electives that the boxed curriculums don't include, and so on and so forth)

I'm in 11th grade and have been homeschooling with a customized curriculum all through highschool. If you need any suggestions or tips, just e-mail me. I'd be happy to help, and i'm sure mom will want to throw in a tip or two as well.

  2. Absolutely! I have home schooled by formulating a curriculum from library resources and free internet materials. Have your mom check out the department of education curriculum guide for the grade she plans to teach. My state has everything online and available the public. I used the state curriculum guide to make sure I covered everything.

  3. Yes!!! There are so many resources out there. You can use the internet, computer programs, library resources, books and everyday life experiences. The world can literally become your classroom!

  4. i guess you could but BOB JONES is a good one if your up for a challenge and ABEKA (spelling on that I cant remember) was a program that I used for years. Through Abeka there is also homeschooling videos where you have a techer on your tv but you can pause and rewind to learn things and you can work at your own pace.

  5. My mum goes to the book stores and asks what books the schools are doing and thats what we do. then if you do go back to school you will be up to speed!

  6. Look for a home school chat room or email list in your city or county.  Home schooling is legal in all 50 states, so there is bound to be one (or many) that you could ask other current homeschoolers about curriculum, books, field trips, etc.  Also, each state has different legal requirements about how you can homeschool, so find out what you need to do to follow the law and avoid problems later.

  7. Hi,

I think making your own curriculum  is the best way to go.

When you plan your own curriculum (your course of study) - you choose where you will put your emphasis depending on who you are, your interests, your hobbies and your family's goals.

Once you've worked out where you are headed, you can find materials that suit you and suit your particular learning style.

Do you like hands on projects?  Do you like to learn by reading? Do you like to use workbooks? Do you like to research your area of interest and present it in a project/speech....?

There are so many ways of doing things and it is exciting as a homeschooler that you can find out really what makes you tick and enjoy following your interests.

Perhaps you want to do a course on-line or a local course run in your community which suits your interest.

Begin by listing the goals you have for homeschooling.  What do you want it to look like?  What do you want to achieve?

Then find courses, books, libraries, materials, curriculum which will help you pursue your goals.

It's an exciting journey and I wish you all the very best.

  8. Yes, indeed!  Doing your own curriculum is the best way to go, because you can design it around your interests and needs.

Homefires.com has many ideas to get you started.

    Have fun!  :D

  9. Yes, apparently that's what homeschooling is all about.... most homeschool mums I know homeschool using different methods, using whatever suits their child.....Look on the internet for subjects you're interested in taking...and maybe you can register to do these over the internet or just look up material for your studies...good luck and don't stress!

  10. Absolutely yes!  There are many resources available to you.  Check out www.hslda.org, www.oceanetwork.org, www.home-school.com, www.home-school.org....

Then do a yahoo-search for "homeschool highschool" and I'm sure that you will come up with loads of information.

    Keep it simple!

    Focus on the basics.

Math, writing and reading -- then start taking a few practice college-entry SAT tests (10 or 12!)  You'll be well prepared for getting a good score on your final college level SAT.

All you really need is a good math program, pens and paper and lots of really good reading books --- use a dictionary and an encyclopedia and you will be able to learn anything you want to know.  Spend time in the local library and on educational sites on the internet.

    You will do great!
