These days, what is the cost of getting your private pilot's licens e? I've always wanted to do this but never had the time and money all at one time.

Now that I have the time and a little money I'd sure like to go for it.

I'm located in Orange Co., Calif.

  1. The cost to get a private pilot license ranges, if you get your license in the minimum hours required they estimate anywhere from 6-$7000 depending on the school you are at. I think its safe to say that you should give yourself an estimate between 7,000 and $8,000 just for some cushion because of rising gas prices!!    Always add at least a thousand or so to the schools estimates for the different licenses!

    Good luck to you!!

Oh check this website out it really helped me out with all the costs of becoming a pilot!!!!! It's got all of the steps to go through to become a pilot n such!!

  2. You can't get a pilot's 'license'.  It's a 'Certificate'.  I have one.

Private will run about $6K, Instrument another $5K to $6K, depending on how you do it.

There's part 61, and part 135.  Part 61 is one on one with an instructor, part 135 is in a school environment. Figure out what's best for you.

Have your money saved up first. Schedule 3 flights a week - fly at least twice.  Get your medical out of the way first - no sense spending the money on training if you can't get your medical.  Study for your written while you flight train.

    Good luck...

  3. i live in New Zealand, and here im paying $68,000NZ to get my private license and commericial license.

got it on a student loan with no interest so its all good.

its mean, i fly helicopters though! there way cooler :P

  4. There's no definitive answer. It could be as cheap as $6K to as much as $25K. All depending on how long it takes you to get it, how much time and effort you put in, how much you study, what the school charges per hour for flight time, what the school charges for the instructor's time. The more often you fly and the harder you work at it the cheaper it will be. So if you do it be sure you have the money and time to finish. Otherwise you end up starting over again later or repeating a lot because you'll forget it over time.

It cost me about $15K. My aircraft rental was $102.50 hour and $47.50 an hour for the instructor. I flew about 4-5 days a week in a C-172 and it took me 6 months.  I also started off with a bad instructor and wasted time and money my first two months on someone that was an awful teach. Good luck.

  5. ...shop around... you could spend a couple "K" and there's a bunch of extras... medical (flight surgeon) exam. tests etc. and it depends what you're looking for... "single" engine, multi engine...in-line thrust...jet...lots to look at first...

  6. Get a student loan from 7k-12k and then just study and work as hard as you can.  Fly atleast 3 times per week so you retain the knowledge from your last flight.  If you get airsick your first few times dont sweat it.  You will get used to it and you will learn to relax in the airplane.  Have fun, it is great!!!

  7. Training to earn a private pilot's certificate in the USA requires actual hands-on flight training under the supervision of a licensed instructor.  The average costs in today's market are...

Aircraft rental...  40 (minimum) to 60 hours at around $100-$125 per hour (cost includes fuel)

Instructor pay... $25-40 per hour.  (20-30 hours)

    Ground School... $350-$500

Charts, radio headset, misc tools and equipment... $250-$400

Actually earning your private pilot's certificate and being able to fly a small airplane all by yourself... Priceless!

It may be possible to negotiate all of this bundled into a complete package for a bit less money, but expect to pay between $7,000 and $8,000 at today's prices.  If fuel prices go up again, then the cost of training will also go up.

  8. Go talk to my friend Raul at AFI flight training in Fullerton.  Its cheaper than going to John Wayne and you'll like the school.  Tell him Jason sent ya :)

They'll give you a more realistic estimate of the cost, but its probably going to run you near $8k in OC.  The biggest way you can save money isn't by going to the cheapest school though.  It sounds cliche, but the best way to save $$$ is to do your homework.
