  1. Quotes would be very lengthy.  For the text, please see http://books.google.com/books?id=nE_Si_b...      [pp. 38-42]

Below is the essence of the conversation:

The conversation takes place in the bunkhouse, after dinner, when Slim and George sit down to play a game of cards while the men outside played horseshoes. George defends Lennie, and he admits to Slim that he himself isn't so smart, or he would have his own farm by now. He tells Slim how he and Lennie grew up in the same town; that he has taken care of Lennie ever since Lennie's Aunt Clara, who raised him, died.  He explains that Lennie followed him everywhere; and that he used to play tricks on Lennie because Lennie was not very bright and would do anything he was told.  He explains that Lennie never held a grudge or got angry.  Slim agrees that Lennie is a good guy, not a mean guy; and that he just gets into trouble.  George trusts Slim, and he tells him what happened to Lennie in Weed:   Lennie saw a woman in a pretty dress, and because he loves to touch soft things, he started to stroke her dress. The woman was terrified; she tried to pull away; Lennie got confused; and Lennie held on to her with all his strength. George explains that he had to hit him over the head to get him to let go.  The girl accused Lennie of rape, and he and Lennie had to hide out until nightfall and then run out of town.
