This is my first year teaching and it is a 6th grade position. I was informed earlier that I will recieve a $200 stipen to buy what I need for my classroom. I understand that as a first year teacher I can expect to spend a few thousand dollars during my first year. I am looking for programs that will maximize my classroom equipment and supplies and minimize how much I have to spend.

  1. i dont know how much it costs but type to learn is amazing!!! (for 6th graders to learn typing)

  2. Teachers Help Site:

  3. Ask if your school has a PTA or some type of parent body. Sometimes, they help fundraise to get teachers more stipends. Trust me, it is never enough. My first year- 8 years ago- I spent between $8K and $10k! Be creative, I would go to flea markets and second hand stores. I also scavenged A LOT from veteran teachers who discarded items.

Beyond that, your state may provide a tax credit for teachers. In CA it used to be at $250. Again, not much. You can always try saving receipts and itemizing deductions, as a last resort.

Hang in there and good luck.

  4. First, you need to get a list of "baseline" materials the school supplies. That way you don't waste money on that stuff. You will have to ask for it though, they don't exactly advertise they have to provide many things for you. Keep an eye out for retiring teachers tying to dump off their stuff. That can be huge. Most of all, don't get crazy buying stuff. It will accumulate quickly once you get in the profession. Also, stores like Office Max, Target, Kmart, and WalMart always have massive sales with incredible deals in July and August. Stockpile when that happens. I usually buy 20 boxes of Crayola markers (get the good stuff) (20 dollars) 200 spiral bound notebooks $20. Etc.  If you are spending thousands, you are being ripped off. I spend 300-500 a year on top of a 75 dollar stipend. Schools have to provide much of what teachers foolishly buy.

I wish I knew a group that can help, I know there are many resources on the internet if you look. Also, try and get a class list with addresses. Send each kid a postcard welcoming them to your class. That starts you off on the right foot and parents are likely to buy alot of what you need. Heck, I got a fridge, water cooler, markers, paper, everything from parents and I teach in VERY VERY VERY low income schools.
