Okay so there are pictures of people like 16 at restaurant-like places with these machines that look like bongs that have tubes coming out that go into your mouth. Smoke comes out of the people's mouths, but these pictures are takin in public places and there are small children around. does anyone know what these things are?

The pipe is called a hooka, and its a very common middle eastern deal. Hooka bars are popping up all over the place now in America.

The can be filled with pretty much anything you want. Sometimes tobacco, although in the Middle East, they prefer a flavored gila plant leaf. The leaf is cured in much the same way as tobacco, but they add flavorings such as banana or mint.

And its considered much healthier since there isn't much smoke inhaled. They light a small fire (or sometimes no fire, just a heat source) under a dish of water. Then they place the gila or tobacco on a grate above the water, and let the steam carry the flavor. You suck on the end of your pipe, and get the flavor of whatever it is.

hookah is flavored tobacco and it is a tradition that comes from the middle east, but it is getting very popular now....  Hookah Bars are becoming "cool". The tobacco actually tastes really good and is filtered through water, so its more of a flavored steam that you are inhaling instead of smoke. It is much more pleasnt than smoking and nicotine is the only drug in it!

it is not uncommon for people to use a hookah to smoke marijuana or hash... but they arent doing it at a hookah cafe or a bar..
