i have always wondered why all the tv stations in my area (Raleigh-Durham,NC,more specifically Durham) have abbreviations starting with W (ex. WRAL,WTVD,WRAZ,WRDC,WLFL,etc.) and the radio stations are the same (WQSM,WRAL,WDCG,etc.)but when you go to the western part of the country, they start with K.Why is that and what do they stand for?

  1. East of the Mississippi use W, West of the Mississippi use K but some older station from before this rule was established in the late 20s are allowed to be the W or K regardless of region. Stations across the world were given front call letters in London in 1912 or thereabouts and the US got W and K for commercial stations and N and A for Military Use.
