I was watching Planet of the Apes(the new one) and in the movie it said that monkeys cannot swim. We all know hollywood never lies lol! But is that true are monkeys like us, and cannot swim unless they are taught? and have we ever trained them to swim? Or is it just hollywood trying to make the movie more intresting?

When i get older I wanna train the colony 1st aquatic SEA MONKEYS!!!! ok i am joking but this is a serious question

  2. yup

probably b/c its so hot here

  3. Most animals avoid water and do NOT swim by choice. The only way for them to learn is to fall in water, figure out how to stay afloat and then somehow get out of the water. Otherwise, they die and remove their genes from the gene pool as being too stupid to figure out how to survive. Throw a dog in water, and it tries to run in the water, what we call a dog paddle. It just so happens that what the dog does naturally, run, happens to work to make the dog swim in a manner of speaking. The dog paddle is a natural thing which ends up in survival. The same applies to a monkey. It does not swim as humans know it, but it will do a rudimentary dog paddle and the ones that figure this out, survive. However, it is not a natural thing for a monkey to by choice enter the water and swim. The animals will swim only if forced to do so by circumstance to survive. Human beings are the only animals to swim by choice as a form of recreation. In Japan, there are monkeys which learn from each other. I think it is on the northernmost island of Hokkaido (sp?), where there are hot springs and in the winter, monkeys live much of their lives in the warm pools of water to survive the winter. I do not know if this qualifies as swimming, but it was one of the most extraordinary sights I have ever seen in my travels.

  4. Actually I think every animal can. I'm not sure but I think so. If not I think atleast almost every animal can swim :)

  5. First of all, you didn't pay very close attention to the movie or else you'd remember the part where they cover this basic concept: apes are not monkeys.

That said monkeys swim, but apes are overall poor swimmers and humans are the only great primates known to engage in swimming regularly. In fact, humans are the only great primates who can hold their breath!

In fact, this lead some biologists to posit the "Aquatic Ape Theory," which states that most of the differences in humans and other apes can be explained by hypothesizing that we had an amphibious stage in our development. This would explain:

    Our hairlessness.

Our downward-pointing nostrils (the only primates who have them).

Our more sustantial fat deposits (like water mammals have).

Our high requirement for omega 3 fats (found in fish).

    Our paddle-shaped feet.

Our ability to hold our breath (stated above).

Our profuse sweating (which other primates lack but would make sense underwater).

  6. Monkeys usually avoid water but they can swim if the situation calls for just like if they are avoiding a predator. Debrazza guenons Cercopithecus neglectus, Allen’s swamp monkeys Allenopithecus nigroviridis, and proboscis monkeys Nasalis larvatus can swim. They may swim across a stream or river to avoid predators or get to food. Monkeys also try to swim for curiosity and new experience sake.☺
