Has any breeder thought hmm.. what would happen if u bred a really nice thoroughbred with a nice miniture and make a really nice pony. like frozen s***n or something. i know they wouldnt breed like that because well minatures cant exactly fly can they. obviously a mini could not hold a horses foal it would get too big but what a bout a horse carrying a mini-ish foal. Or does something significant happen when the foal is pushed out the small hole.

so is it just no one has thought of it, or are they geneticly some how incompatible??? they are both horses just a size difference.

  1. One of my trainers bred her Mini Stud to a TB mare and got a stunning little pony out of it.

  2. This has already been done....

It does put the foal at a health risk, the size of the heart & cardiovascular system often isn't the correct size when such an extreme difference in paternal & maternal genetics.

It has similar health risks compared to little people & giants.

  3. Stop and think of this. If the foal had legs of the mimi how would it suckle? There is no way for it to reach the dam.

  4. It really isn't advisable. Breeding a large breed of a species with a very little breed is not a good idea. They usually have strange proportions and heaps of other deformities. I remember reading about a large and small dog that were bred and the puppies were so sick (as in ill). One thing I remember is that their eyes were too small for their sockets, just because of what they inherited off each parents.

A horse could carry a mini foal but if this ever happened I'd hope it was only because the horse was a surrogate, NOT the actual mother.

Both horses, yes, but no responsible breeders of ANY animal EVER breed a large and small of the breed together.

Usually, to obtain small horses, the smallest ones of a breed will be bred together. This keeps continuing (obviously no inbreeding etc, just small specimens) until the horse is much smaller than the usual of its breed. Then these small ones may be bred with a breed which is usually smaller but is similar size to these small horses. This keeps continuing with smaller and smaller horse breeds, then ponies, but keeping horses as the majority so the end result is horse proportioned and can thus be described as a miniature horse.

So, as you can see, breeding miniature horses is a very complicated process involving lots of thought into how to do it and how to make them small without crossing to horses with a very large size difference.

    Hope I helped :)

Good breeders don't ask questions like, "I wonder what would happen if..."

Enough can go wrong breeding a healthy quality stallion with a healthy quality mare of the same breed, without trying a random mating just to see what the offspring would look like.  Chances are the foal would inherit half its sire's characteristics and half its dam's; it wouldn't be a smaller version of a TB or a larger version of a mini.  It would probably be a gangly attempt at a horse, with poor conformation, odd looking legs and a head that doesn't fit...

Edit:  I didn't say breeders don't breed out of morbid curiosity - I said good breeders don't.  There are plenty of good breeders around; however, for every 1 responsible sensible person aiming for a healthy foal with good conformation and correct breed characteristics, there are a dozen idiots breeding for cuteness, colour and curiosity.

I'm not unpleasant, I'm just straight to the point.

  6. l can't believe some one actually asked this question ???

  7. Actually Have you heard of the FALABELLA, its actually a Minature horse under 7hh! Its called a horse because of its refined appearence!

I believe they originally  used a small thoroughbred and small sheltland to create this breed! I had a book on this breed, but can't find it. it is too small to be ridden
