  1. They may be doing it to teach living skills. Ask at both the school administration level and the school board level for clarification. If not for that reason, complain, and do it loudly--newspapers, local TV stations, your state department of education/public instruction, etc.

  2. It is most likely for life skills training. It is unfortunate that so-called "normal" kids get this as assigned punishment which puts a different spin on the activity. Our students also clean up the stadium after ball games. We get paid for this service activity and it is a way to support our other activities such as cooking meals each week, or going to a restaurant, or buying our work clothes for part-time paid employment.

As you get older, you will learn not to knee-jerk into a negative reaction to something before you actually know background information.

  3. this practice does seem way beyond insensitive. have you spoken with the principal about it?  at minimum, i think you should investigate to see if school is endorsing the policy and if there is any conceivable rationale behind it. if not satisfied, you may also want to involve the PTA.  or the school district administrative office. or the local school board, the state school board, the news media, etc.  i would like to know what you find out. i agree with you that this is very offensive on its face and I'm unable to imagine a legitimate reason for it.

  4. I would take this to the school board. I would write a letter to the newspaper. I would contact local TV news stations.

There suppose to be adult school employees who do this. This is an outrage

  5. Britain's own anti-slavery campaigner, William Wilberforce, put the same idea, "Evil succeeds when good men do nothing." ...

But do it carefully as "fools rush in where angels fear to tread"

Phone a support organisation for people with special needs and ask for advice. Or a local newspaper, but be careful of not having the correct info. Having a child with special needs no reason could be given to me for this disgusting behaviour.  Living skills would apply to teaching all children to pick up after themselves not for others to do it for THEM!!!!

  6. You could look at this as job training - the speds usually get jobs like this after they "graduate" from school  and they still can't read, write, or figure out how to give change without the cash register telling them how much change to give.

  7. THAT IS NOT RIGHT!!

Talk to the school board and other parents of the special education students. Talk to the newspaper and post the problem on the internet. Talk to the local tv stations.

    They are violating the law.

They are also violating the ethics and morals most of us have.

If I was in that program, I would refuse and I am a special education student. In my school we are treated with respect most of the time although sometimes the teachers lose their cool.

  8. The outrageous part of this is that it defines the special ed kids as third rate citizens in the minds of the"normal" ones, and reinforces this demeaning attitude with the special ed ones.

What would happen if the special ed kids were to rebel and refuse to do this.??

  9. I agree with the first person, that is awful and probably not allowed. Tell everyone you can think of (you might even want to take some pictures of them doing it, if you can sneak them).

  10. That is extremely inappropriate.

I think the best steps you can take are to get some kind of evidence as has been previously mentioned. Then go above the school directly to the school board and to news outlets at the same time. One news channel in my city has a "whistle blower" program that alerts people to injustices in the area. If yours does not have this, still contact them. Contact parents as well, because some of them may not know this is going on. Start a petition if the situation isn't resolved quickly, believe me, that won't be difficult to get support. Also, if things get really hectic and no one is hearing you, contact any disability rights service or non profit organization that works with the disabled.

These are just some ideas, as long as it's brought to light something can surely come of it.

    Best of Luck!

  11. In addition to the press, TV, radio, city council, school board, is ther any organization for special needs people in yout town?

Is there a local ombudsman, human rights group or commission, or other such thing?

Whay about your local Senator, Memeber of the House, MP, MPP, etc?

Spread the news.  The more people there are that know, the more likely something will be done.

    BUT A WORD OF ADVICE:

    1) Get some proof first - digital pictures, other willing to talk witnesses, etc.

    2) Do not go out and spread the news and make trouble on your own, try to get several people to go along with you. (eg: A petition.)  You do not want to be hate targeted by some idiot.

    3) Always be civil, polite, etc.  Loook like you are a sophisticated somebody.  You will be taken more seriously that way.

    Good Luck!
